Auto of the week: Subaru Impreza WRX STI from Fast & Furious |
For our auto spot last week we caught a ride with Fast & Furious’s resident bad-boy Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) in his beloved 1970 Dodge Charger. Now, we’re staying with the hit blockbuster that earned the biggest opening weekend for a car-themed film ever (it’s predecessor being Disney•Pixar yarn Cars – not exactly the most adrenaline-fuelled of flicks) to go for a spin with Toretto’s rival/ chum Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) in his Subaru Impreza WRX STI. After all, it’s only fair. We’ve sampled the muscle car and now we’re moving on to a tuner…
Walker’s FBI man gets behind the wheel of the Japanese import when he reminds Dom that he owes him a 10 second car. Without missing a beat, Dom smashes the window of the impounded Subaru and quips, “now, we’re even”. The Subaru takes over from O’Conner’s previous motor, the Nissan Skyline which is driven during the L.A. street race, earning its moment of big screen glory during the final climactic chase through the underground tunnels that connect America with Mexico. |

In Canada, a country with a thrifty compulsion for compacts, the sales bump was based mainly on the new Forester and Impreza models. But Subaru's global best-seller is the larger Legacy and the bulk of those sales are in America. Which explained why Subaru picked Detroit for the unveiling of the initial concept and New York for the debut of the new fifth generation production version of the Legacy. |
